Being a PAL

I was lucky enough to be chosen to be a PAL and this past week have been helping the new first year photography students to settle in, answering any of their queries.

In the middle of the week us PALs got the opportunity to go with the first years on their trip to Firstsite- a big art gallery in Colchester- the exhibition we were there for was the 'Xerography' one which was about photocopying and how it plays a role with contemporary art now. I found it quite interesting and some of the work was quite inspiring…

We then came across another building nearby that was showing some other artwork, in all truthfulness this work inspired me…

This work had a lot more elements that inspired me in my own work, the use of paint in the background of the top two photos being the negative space but also creating a more playful mood and with the bottom photo how it looks quite french what with the short pixie crop hairstyle, black and white clothes and statement sunglasses.

We also came across this in the garden, it was a building that effectively worked as a camera, our tutor told us the name of it but I forgot it and after doing research on it I still couldn't find the name of it, but here's some photos of it anyway…

The building acted essentially as a giant camera, its lens being the box on top of the building.

The image that was projected onto the white table, it was very interesting as you could use different levers to zoom in or out of the building that was being shown from outside and could rotate it.

I found that being a PAL improved my confidence and was fun and rewarding, it was also interesting to meet the new students and see some of their photos they had taken in the week.
